The grudge is an American remake of the Japanese film Ju-On. It is about a nurse working in Tokyo who is exposed to a supernatural being who takes the souls of people, kills them, then passes the curse onto another victim. When looking at the poster, the genre of the film can be predicted because of the stereotypical dark image, the bold fonts and the colours that are used. The image shows the character is evil as half of its face is covered. The bold fonts draw attention to the title of the film and the colours represent danger and death. I think that this poster is successful in creating tension and persuades the viewer to go and watch the film to see what ‘the grudge’ is.
Main picture:
The main picture on the poster is of a face, however we can only see one eye as it is covered by long hair which suggests she is a woman. The characters skin is very pale which makes her seem ghost-like or deathly to increase the fear and this contrasts with the black background to grab attention. The focus on the eye makes the viewer feel on edge as it is like she is watching you.
Background colour:
The viewers attention is immediatly drawn to the characters face on the poster. Half of the face has been covered by the characters black hair and this creates the background for the poster. This produces a sense of mystery as the viewer does not know what the character is, as if the character is hiding something. The colour black is a common convention of the horror genre and it is associated with death and evil, which shows that something bad is going to happen in the film.
The title of the film:
The title of the film is red, in a bold font and all in capitals. This colour is the only colour which stands out from the rest of the poster and it is associated with danger and blood. The capital letters and the bold font also assist in making the title stand out to the viewer. Each letter is covered by the thin streaks of the black hair which combines black and the red together, showing the genre of the film. Above the title of the film, is the name of the main character that stars in the film, “Sarah Michelle Gellar”. This would appeal to people who are fans of her and like her other films, persuading them to go and see The Grudge at the cinema. The font of this writing is smaller than the title; however it is still noticeable for people to see, so they know who is in the film.
The release date and the website:
The release date is also in red and in capitals. Although it is in a smaller font, it still stands out from the dark background as the writing around it is in white. It just tells the viewer the month the film is released and not the date, leaving the viewer want to find out more. Underneath the release date is the website of the film which is in white and a smaller font; it is purposely placed here, so the viewer can find out more information about the film.
The slogan:
The slogan of the film “It never forgives. It never forgets” is in a white font and placed at the bottom of the poster, however it still stands out. The use of the two short sentences creates suspense as the viewer does not know who “it” is and this suggests The Grudge is not human.
Main Credits:
These are in a block of white font at the bottom of the poster, giving more information about the director, producers, and the actors and actresses in the film. This is a convention of a film poster and the small font shows it is not as important as the rest of the aspects on the poster.
