I will now analyse my work to make sure that I have included all the necessary codes and conventions and why I used particular shots, angles etc and what effect these have.
At the beginning of my trailer, I used the 'green preview screen' as this is shown at the beginning of every trailer of every genre and it makes it look more professional. Then a short version of the institution logo is shown as the full length of the logo would be too long for any trailer or teaser trailer. This is revealed to show what company distributed the film and it can sometimes tell the genre of the film if the institution is a genre based company. The music starts straight away over the logo and it is quite slow and eerie, and then there is a medium shot of a girl on the sofa and we can hear a phone ringing. This location would make the audience think that she is safe because she is in her house. The camera then pans as she gets up to go out of the room. Then there is a close up of the girls feet going up the stairs.
The next shot is a black screen with the narrative text on it saying 'This Halloween'. This immediately establishes the genre of the film. It is in a red bold font which clearly stands out and the colour represents blood, fear and danger. At this point the music builds up and gets faster and louder. This will put the audience on edge and build up tension. The next shot is a medium shot of the girl picking up the phone, then it pans to her talking. There is no one there which creates a sense of mystery within the audience. The phone is then thrown towards the camera which is a extreme close up.
The next narrative text says 'Lock your doors'. This is directed to the audience which places them in the film and makes them feel tense. The next shot is a point of view shot from the killer looking through the window at the girl. The music starts to build up and when she turns around, the camera quickly pans down so the girl can not see the killer watching her. It then goes to another point of view shot from the killer stalking the same girl and her friend. The fact that the killers face is not shown, does not give anything away to the audience, therefore they will have to go and watch the film if they want to find out who he is.
The music then gets lower as a long shot of a graveyard is shown at night time. This is followed by a quick close up of a hand covered in blood. This creates mystery as the audience does not know who it is. Then there is a close up of the killers hand opening a draw a picking up a knife. After this, there is a close up of writing in blood saying 'your next'. This will shock the audience as it is like it is directed at them.
The next narrative text is also directed at the audience, saying 'Don't answer the phone'. This is followed by the camera zooming in to a phone that is ringing with an unknown number. There is then a medium shot of the killer banging on the door which puts the audience on edge as it will make them feel in danger. Next, there is a point of view shot from the killer chasing the girl we saw earlier on, then a quick close up of a leg which is effective as it does not give the persons identity away. The next shot is a close up of the killer opening a door, which emphasises the girl's vulnerability as the killer is coming into her house. There is then a close up of the same phone with 6 unknown missed calls on it, creating a sense of mystery.
The next narrative text says 'He's coming' which will build up suspense within the audience. The next shot is the same point of view shot chasing the girl, however the camera is getting much closer towards her, making the audience feel fear for the character. This is followed by a medium shot of a body covered in blood, however we can not see her face which does not give it away before the audience go and see the film. Then there is a medium shot of the girl running through the house with the lights flickering suggesting that the killer is in her house.
The next shot is the title of the film. This is in a red, bold font that is bigger from the rest of the narrative text shown earlier so the audience clearly know what the title of the film is. The music then starts to come to an end as there is a point of view shot of the girl looking through a cupboard with the killer coming towards it. This places the audience in the film and makes them feel panic. This is followed by a point of view shot from the killer going towards the girl who is screaming. The sound effect used will make the audience jump as it is unexpected. This is then followed by title slide saying 'coming soon' which will put anticipation within the audience as they will have to wait for an official release date. However they will have a vague idea that it is going to come out in October as it said 'This Halloween'. Although they will have to wait a long while as this trailer will be shown months in advance. Finally, the end credits are shown in a white font and the distributors logo is shown again to advertise it. Also the website is displayed in a larger font so it is clearly visible and so the audience can find out more information about the film if they wanted to.
Overall, I feel that I have used the codes and conventions well in order to make a successful trailer with the right ideology and representation that I wanted to portray.
